Tuesday In-Person April 6 Troop Meeting – 7 PM

We are planning to meet in-person this Tuesday (weather permitting) – please review this information carefully:

·                 Sign-up and the $20 per person fee for the April 17-18 campout to Moore Woods is due Tuesday (Scout Bucks balances are attached – any money paid for the March campout was credited to Scout Bucks).

·                  Meet at 7 pm at the flagpole next to the Ralph Moak Garage at Faith Presbyterian Church.

·                  The meeting will end close to 8 pm.

·                  Masks are required. Please practice social distancing as much as possible.

·                  We have an adult volunteer to supervise restroom clean-up, so restrooms will be available if needed.

·                  Bring a chair. You may want to bring a water bottle.

·                  Dress for the weather.

·                  In case of inclement weather, the meeting will go on via WebEx. A decision will be made in the 24 hours leading up to the start time.

·                  We have received several donations of used Troop 48 t-shirts, Class C t-shirts (Scout related) and other uniform parts. We will have these out from 6:45 pm to 7:30 pm, so please plan to stop by and pick something up for free. Scouts who will be attending summer camp will need to wear a Troop 48 t-shirt, BSA shorts or pants and BSA socks each day of camp, so this is a perfect opportunity to get these items stocked for camp at no cost. We will be placing an order for new t-shirts before summer camp.

Welcome to our New Scout

We would like to welcome Nicholas Nygren to Troop 48! Nicholas is Noah’s younger brother.

Are You Missing a Camp Chair?

Left behind on the January trip was a camp chair. An announcement about it on the backpacking trip did not uncover the owner. If you, or your son is missing a chair, and can describe it, it will be returned on the next trip. Please contact the Scoutmaster by calling his landline as listed on the troop roster.

Swim Check on April 13

All Scouts and Dads need to pass the BSA Swim Check annually and qualify as a “BSA Swimmer” to participate in water activities with the Troop, such as canoeing, swimming or water sports. Our Swim Check will be held on Tuesday night, April 13 at the Germantown Athletic Club instead of our regular Troop meeting. The schedule for what time to arrive will be:

7:30 – Phoenix Patrol & SPL, ASPL, JASM

7:45 – Battering Rams Patrol

8:00 – Flying Falcons Patrol

Adults – any time before 8:00 pm, those assisting with sign-offs should come at 7:30 pm

Each person swimming needs to complete the attached Guest Waiver form and bring it with them on April 13. If you are a member of Germantown Athletic Club, please bring your membership pass and you won’t need the waiver form. When you enter the Club, please check in with Mrs. Kim Ridenhour and turn in your waiver form before heading down to the pool.

Scouts who have not earned Second Class can complete requirements 5b and 5c. The requirements are listed below (you must use one of the strokes listed properly and have a strong stroke to pass as a Swimmer):

SWIMMER:

Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, and begin swimming. Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be swum continuously and include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating.

BEGINNER (Second Class requirement 5b):

Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, resume swimming as before, and return to starting place.

Second Class requirement 5c:

Demonstrate water rescue methods by reaching with your arm or leg, by reaching with a suitable object, and by throwing lines and objects.

Annual Health and Medical Record – due April 20

The Annual Health and Medical Record form can be found online at https://www.scouting.org/health-and-safety/ahmr/. Parts A, B, and C should be completed annually for all Scouts, dads, and leaders attending campouts and are due to Mr. Richard Ralph by April 20. Part C requires a doctor’s signature, so make your appointments now.

·        Do not leave any lines blank (You must designate at least one adult to transport your Scout on Part A)

·        Do not email the health forms

·        Any changes in medications taken from what is reported on the health form should be communicated to Mr. Ralph so he has the most up-to-date information at all times.

Final Skymont Payments due April 27

Attached is a list of the merit badge fees that are due for each Scout by April 27. The final payment for adults of $15 is also due by April 27. You can pay online using PayPal or Plastiq, use Scout Bucks if you have an available balance, or pay in-person at the troop meeting (weather permitting).

Promote Scouting on Facebook

The Eastern District is asking everyone to promote Scouting in our community and on social media. Many Cub Scout packs did not renew their charter, so we need to encourage youth to join Scouting. Attached is a list of Facebook groups in our area. If you are a member of any of these groups, please post items that promote Scouting.
