April Campout Fees due Tuesday, 3/29

The campout for April will be for Camporee at Camp Currier in Eudora, MS on April 8-10th. The deadline to sign up and pay the $25 camping fee is this Tuesday, March 29th.  We would like to have a good showing for the Camporee competition, so please sign up for this campout.  If you sign up after the deadline, the Scout needs to follow the procedures outlined on the Troop website at http://www.troop48.org/f/docs/RulesandProcedures.html

Welcome New Scout

We would like to welcome our newest Scout and his family to Troop 48 – Braden Robbins. Welcome!

BSA Swim Check – Be Prepared

All Scouts and Dads need to pass the BSA Swim Check annually and qualify as a “BSA Swimmer” to participate in water activities with the Troop, such as canoeing, swimming or water sports. Our May and August campouts are canoeing and water sports, so you must be a BSA Swimmer to go on these trips.  Our Swim Check will be held on Tuesday night, April 12th, from 7:30 – 9:00 pm at Germantown Athletic Club instead of our regular Troop meeting. If you haven’t been swimming in a while, it would be good to get some practice in now. We will also have a fun swim night on Tuesday April 26th at the same place and time (also instead of a regular Troop meeting). Scouts who have not earned Second Class can complete requirement 8b (5b in new handbook) on April 12th and 8c (5c in new handbook) on April 26th.  The requirements are listed below (you must use one of the strokes listed properly and have a strong stroke to pass as a Swimmer):

SWIMMER:

Jump feetfirst into water over the head in depth, level off, and begin swimming. Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be swum continuously and include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating.

BEGINNER (Second Class requirement 8b or 5b in new handbook):

Jump feetfirst into water over the head in depth, level off, swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, resume swimming as before, and return to starting place.

Second Class requirement 8c or 5c in new handbook – April 26th:

Demonstrate water rescue methods by reaching with your arm or leg, by reaching with a suitable object, and by throwing lines and objects.

BSA Health Form Part C due April 30

All Scouts and Dads going on a Troop event that lasts more than 72 hours must complete the Part C health form and have it signed by a physician (in addition to Parts A and B). Part C would be required for Skymont summer camp in June or our July Summer Adventure trip. However, we encourage all Scouts to turn in Part C. This form is due to Mr. Patrick Rice by April 30, so make your appointments now with your physician to have the form signed. The form can be found at this link: http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/HealthandSafety/ahmr.aspx  Click on the Download next to “Are You Going to Camp?”
