Save the date – April 28
The Troop will be have a service project at the church on Saturday, April 28 from 9 am to 2 pm, with lunch provided. We will be painting the wrought-iron fence around the playground. We would like to have all Scouts participate, to give something back to our sponsor church who has been so good to us. So please plan to commit to participating in this service project.
Fly Fishing Merit Badge
Here’s a chance to earn a merit badge that only 4,597 Scouts earned last year. The Fly Fishing merit badge will be offered this spring and fall by Mr. Mark Flege, an avid fly fisher who has caught 13 species of fish on fly in the U.S. and Canada. Be one of the very few to earn this merit badge in 2018. (It ranked 90 out of the 139 merit badges earned in 2017.) In fact, this merit badge as not been earned in Troop 48 in the last 5 or so years. There will be an orientation in March followed by the actual fishing in the fall. See below for the rest of the information.

T-Shirt Orders
Attached is an order form for Troop t-shirts, the prices and choices are shown on the form. All Scouts must have a Troop t-shirt for Camporee in April and enough t-shirts to wear each day for Skymont summer camp in June. Orders and money for t-shirts are due to Mrs. Teri Gulati by March 27. We will not be able to accept orders after March 27, but will accept them earlier. Please consider now if you will need a larger size soon or if you would like a long-sleeve t-shirt for the fall/winter, as we will not be ordering again for several months.
BSA Swim Check – Be Prepared
All Scouts and Dads need to pass the BSA Swim Check annually and qualify as a “BSA Swimmer” to participate in water activities with the Troop, such as canoeing, swimming or water sports. Our May campout is canoeing, so you must be a BSA Swimmer to go on that trip. Our Swim Check will be held on Tuesday night, April 17th instead of our regular Troop meeting. If you haven’t been swimming in a while, it would be good to get some practice in now. Scouts who have not earned Second Class can complete requirements 5b and 5c. The requirements are listed below (you must use one of the strokes listed properly and have a strong stroke to pass as a Swimmer):
SWIMMER:
Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, and begin swimming. Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be swum continuously and include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating.
BEGINNER (Second Class requirement 5b):
Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, resume swimming as before, and return to starting place.
Second Class requirement 5c:
Demonstrate water rescue methods by reaching with your arm or leg, by reaching with a suitable object, and by throwing lines and objects.
