August Campout – Fee due this Tuesday, August 14

Troop 48's next trip will be camping at Fall Creek Falls on August 25-26 with a side trip to Cumberland Caverns. At Cumberland Caverns, there are two spelunking trips to choose from:

Higgenbotham's Revenge

Difficulty Level: Moderate to Challenging

Time: 3.5 – 4 Hours

What To Expect: Follow the historic route of the discoverer, Aaron Higgenbotham. The tour begins with a 1½ mile hike to the Higgenbotham Entrance. You will encounter narrow passageways, ladders (some up to 20 feet high) and muddy trails. The higher adventurers of our troop took this trek a few years back and it was widely acclaimed as a great trip.

Alternately, there is the Daily Walking Tour - This 1½ mile walking tour features incredible formations, a historic 1812 saltpeter mine, a beautiful waterfall and gleaming pools.

Difficulty Level: Moderate

Time: 1.5 Hours

If you don’t want to take either caving trip, but you still want to go camping, please speak with Mr. Issing or Mr. Hormberg about an alternative plan.

Trip Cost – due next Tuesday, August 14

  • Higgenbotham’s Revenge and Camping:  $45
  • Daily Walking Tour and Camping: $45 for ages 13 and older; $38.50 for 11-12 yr-olds
  • Camping only: $25

Advancement

Attached is this month’s advancement report. Please check to see if your record is up to date, and please see Mrs. Vietzke if there are any updates to be made.

Bring your Boy Scout Handbook to the troop meetings so that our advancement chair, Mrs. Vietzke, can update our Troopmaster advancement software.

Ice Cream Pails Needed

The troop is looking for up to nine clean, one-gallon ice cream pails with lids. They can be brought to a troop meeting and left in Room 111.

Second Class Rank Requirement 7c

At the July 31 troop meeting, three officers from the Germantown Police Department presented a program on the dangers of using drugs, alcohol and tobacco. This was in support of 2nd Class requirement #7c. For those Scouts who were present, who have not earned this requirement (most everyone under the rank of 1st Class), they are to discuss the program with their family and explain the dangers of substance addictions and then speak to the Scoutmaster. (The rest of the details are below.) Please encourage your son to have this discussion with his family and to speak to the Scoutmaster sooner than later.

The Details of 2nd Class Requirement #7C:

Participate in a school, community, or troop program on the dangers of using drugs, alcohol, and tobacco and other practices that could be harmful to your health. Discuss your participation in the program with your family, and explain the dangers of substance addictions. Report to your Scoutmaster or other adult leader in your troop about which parts of the Scout Oath and Scout Law relate to what you learned.
