Troop 48 Update - 4/29/19

Posted on Tue, Apr 30, 2019

NOTE: There will be NO troop meeting at the church this Tuesday, we will have our BSA Swim Check instead at the Germantown Athletic Club, 1801 Exeter Rd, Germantown, TN.

BSA Swim Check – this Tuesday

All Scouts and Dads need to pass the BSA Swim Check annually and qualify as a “BSA Swimmer” to participate in water activities with the Troop, such as canoeing, swimming or water sports. Our Swim Check will be held on Tuesday night, April 30th instead of our regular Troop meeting at the Germantown Athletic Club. The schedule for what time to arrive will be:

7:30 – Platinum Sharks patrol

7:45 – Phoenix patrol

8:00 – Plasma Dragons patrol

8:15 – Cobalt Foxes patrol

Adults – any time before 8:00 pm

Each person swimming needs to complete the attached Guest Waiver form and bring it with them on April 30th. If you are a member of Germantown Athletic Club, please bring your membership pass. When you enter the Club, please check in with Mrs. Kim Ridenhour and turn in your form before heading down to the pool.

Scouts who have not earned Second Class can complete requirements 5b and 5c. The requirements are listed below (you must use one of the strokes listed properly and have a strong stroke to pass as a Swimmer):

SWIMMER:

Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, and begin swimming. Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be swum continuously and include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating.

BEGINNER (Second Class requirement 5b):

Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, resume swimming as before, and return to starting place.

Second Class requirement 5c:

Demonstrate water rescue methods by reaching with your arm or leg, by reaching with a suitable object, and by throwing lines and objects.
