Troop 48 Update - 8/15/20
Posted on Sat, Aug 15, 2020
- Tuesday's troop meeting on 8/18 will include two special events:
- Judge Ron Lucchesi, of the General Sessions Court, will be speaking on the constitutional rights and obligations of a U.S. citizen. This is in support of 1st Class requirement #9a which we only stage once a year. All the Scout needs to do to satisfy this requirement is to participate in the discussion. This is the full requirement: Visit and discuss with a selected individual approved by your leader (for example, an elected official, judge, attorney, civil servant, principal, or teacher) the constitutional rights and obligations of a U.S. citizen.
- There will also be a Patrol Leaders' Council election for the role of Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) of the troop and Patrol Leader for each of the two regular Scout patrols. The term will be from September 1st through April 30, 2021. Stump speeches will precede each election and questions may be asked of the candidates. Scoutmaster Issing will moderate this process. Voting will take place online so access to a Web browser will be required to vote. Votes will be anonymous. Winners will be announced that evening. So far, the slate includes Rodney, Colin and Richard.
Note to Flying Falcons Scouts: you are eligible to cast your vote for the next SPL.
- August is Recruitment Month! Did you know the Recruiter Award just might be the most important award to earn in Scouting? Each youth who recruits a friend to Scouting is eligible to receive the BSA Recruiter Badge, which is worn on the front of their uniform under the right pocket. If you think about its ability to grow Scouting and introduce this life-changing program to young people, The Recruiter Strip might be the most important patch in Scouting. It is also one of the easiest to earn. The sole requirement is to recruit a friend into the Scouting program. Why is this award important? It is because it helps introduce the fun and experiences of Scouting to others who may have never had the opportunity to join. Many young people, when asked why they never became a Scout, said "nobody ever invited me." Spread the word! Tell your friends about all the fun things you get to do in Scouting and invite them to a meeting or event. You just might change their life!
- Calling all Scouts, Leaders & Parents of Chickasaw Council! Volunteers are needed to assist in the upcoming Mobile Food Pantry Distributions at the following location: Thursday August 27 and every other Thursday following - Colonial Park Methodist Church, 5330 Park Avenue, Memphis, TN. Click on this link for more details and to sign up to volunteer: Colonial Park Methodist Church Scout Signup.
- We need an adult volunteer to manage our troop’s Facebook site, posting articles each week. Material for posting will be provided. If you are interested in this role, please contact Kim Ridenhour. We also are looking for someone to replace Kim as Committee Chair. Let Kim or John Campbell know if you are interested in that role.
- All Troop 48 in-person activities are cancelled until the church informs us that we can return, however the new Scout Flying Falcons patrol is planning to meet at the firepit at the church on August 22 at 9 am.
