Posted on Sat, Feb 12, 2022

Bring a Friend Night – this Tuesday, February 15

Please invite your friends to join us at the Troop meeting on Tuesday, February 15. If you’ve already invited someone, give them a reminder or offer to pick them up. We’ll have special activities and everyone who brings a friend will have pizza! Scouts, please be sure to arrive early at 6:45 pm to greet our visitors. Please let Mr. John Dockstader know if you are planning to bring a friend. Please encourage young men to join Troop 48 on your social media and to your friends and neighbors. Also, if you have any troop photos to share, anyone can post one photo to our Troop Facebook page, just please do not include any last names of Scouts.

Advancement Report Attached – please review and report any updates needed to Mr. Rodney Donald.

Scout Skill Practice – Saturday, February 19 - 9 AM-Noon

The Troop will have a skills practice on Saturday, February 19 from 9 am to noon, meet at the Ralph Moak garage. All Scouts should plan to be at the practice or let their patrol leader know if they won’t be there. Wear comfortable clothing (no uniforms). Bring your Scout Handbook and you may want to bring a water bottle.

Scout Sunday – Rescheduled for February 20

Please make plans for Scouts and their families to attend the church service at Faith Presbyterian on Sunday, February 20 to celebrate Scout Sunday. We will also take the Troop photo that morning at 10 am in the chapel, and then attend the 10:45 contemporary service in Faith Hall. Scouts should wear Class A uniforms.

Troop T-Shirt Orders Due February 22

Attached is an order form for Troop t-shirts, the prices and choices are shown on the form. All Scouts must have a Troop t-shirt for campouts and enough t-shirts to wear each day for Skymont summer camp in June. Orders and money for t-shirts are due to Mrs. Teri Gulati by Tuesday February 22. If you pay using ScoutBucks, PayPal or Plastiq, please text Mrs. Gulati at 901-481-3617 and let her know that. We will not be able to accept orders after February 22. Please consider now if you will need a larger size later this year or if you would like a long-sleeve t-shirt for the fall/winter, as we will not be ordering again until next year.

Spaghetti Supper – February 25, 5 pm – 7 pm

Tickets for our 66th annual Spaghetti Supper on February 25 were handed out to Scouts, so please start selling those. Tickets are $12 each. For every 8 tickets you sell, you earn 1 free ticket. Scouts will need to turn in money for tickets sold and any unsold tickets. We need all Scouts and parents to help with this event, so please plan to be there on February 25. If you have any questions or need additional tickets, please contact Mrs. Kelley Lee. Below are the sign up links for adult volunteers and each family will need to provide 2 desserts. We still have several Adult Jobs to fill - Please sign up!Attached is the flyer for the spaghetti supper – please post this to your social media or print and post it.

Germantown Athletic Club Members

Our swim check will be held at the Germantown Athletic Club on April 26. The troop pays a $5 fee per person for non-members. If you are a member of GAC and have any free passes you will not use, would you consider donating these to the troop for April 26? Please let Scoutmaster Brian Issing know if you have passes to donate.

Annual Health and Medical Record – due April 19

The Annual Health and Medical Record form can be found online athttps://www.scouting.org/health-and-safety/ahmr/. Parts A, B, and C should be completed annually for all Scouts, dads, and leaders attending campouts and are due to Mr. Chuck Utterback by April 19. Part C requires a doctor’s signature, so make your appointments now.

  • Please TURN IN (2) COPIES of the forms to Mr. Utterback and also keep a copy for your home records. This allows Mr. Utterback to send copies in advance to the Camp Nurse and still have a copy in his possession for quick reference. You can turn in forms at a troop meeting or you can mail forms to Mr. Chuck Utterback, 1228 Brayridge Cove, Collierville, TN 38017
  • Provide a copy of your insurance card with the form – both front and back
  • Provide the immunization record on Part B (Separate printout is also acceptable)
  • Be sure that the Scout and Parent sign the forms (on Parts A and B)

·Do not leave any lines blank (You must designate at least one adult to transport your Scout on Part A)

·Do not email the health forms

·Any changes in medications taken from what is reported on the health form should be communicated to Mr. Utterback so he has the most up-to-date information at all times.

·If you turn in all health and medical records forms by April 19, Mr. Utterback will buy you an ice cream at Skymont!

Swim Check on April 26

Our swim check will be on Tuesday, April 26 at 7:30 PM at the Germantown Athletic Club. Start practicing swimming now to prepare if it has been a while since you have been in the pool. There will be no regular troop meeting on April 26. All Scouts and Dads need to pass the BSA Swim Check annually and qualify as a “BSA Swimmer” to participate in water activities with the Troop, such as canoeing, swimming or water sports. Scouts who have not earned Second Class can complete requirements 5b and 5c. The requirements are listed below (you must use one of the strokes listed properly and have a strong stroke to pass as a Swimmer):

SWIMMER:

Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, and begin swimming. Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be swum continuously and include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating.

BEGINNER (Second Class requirement 5b):

Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, resume swimming as before, and return to starting place.

Second Class requirement 5c:

Demonstrate water rescue methods by reaching with your arm or leg, by reaching with a suitable object, and by throwing lines and objects.
