Troop 48 Update - 3/5/2023

Posted on Sun, Mar 5, 2023

Skymont 2nd Payment and Merit Badge Choices due Tuesday, March 7

At the March 7 Troop meeting, we will be submitting the Merit Badge classes for each Scout attending.  Please review the attached schedule to pick classes.  Please indicate your first and second choices for each time slot.  If you want to send your class list to Scoutmaster Dockstader before the March 7th meeting, he can review it and provide feedback.

The 2nd deposit for Skymont summer camp is due Tuesday, March 7 - $75 for Scouts and $30 for adults.

Scout Skills Practice – Saturday, March 25 – 9 am - Noon

The Troop will have a skills practice on Saturday, March 25 from 9 am to noon, meet at the Ralph Moak garage. All Scouts should plan to be at the practice or let their patrol leader know if they won’t be there. Wear comfortable clothing (no uniforms). Bring your Scout Handbook and you may want to bring a water bottle.

Swim Check on April 25

Our swim check will be on Tuesday, April 25 at 7:00 PM at the Germantown Athletic Club. Start practicing swimming now to prepare if it has been a while since you have been in the pool. There will be no regular troop meeting on April 25. All Scouts and Dads need to pass the BSA Swim Check annually and qualify as a “BSA Swimmer” to participate in water activities with the Troop, such as canoeing, swimming or water sports. Scouts who have not earned Second Class can complete requirements 5b and 5c. The requirements are listed below (you must use one of the strokes listed properly and have a strong stroke to pass as a Swimmer):

SWIMMER:

Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, and begin swimming. Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl; then swim 25 yards using an easy resting backstroke. The 100 yards must be swum continuously and include at least one sharp turn. After completing the swim, rest by floating.

BEGINNER (Second Class requirement 5b):

Jump feet first into water over the head in depth, level off, swim 25 feet on the surface, stop, turn sharply, resume swimming as before, and return to starting place.

Second Class requirement 5c:

Demonstrate water rescue methods by reaching with your arm or leg, by reaching with a suitable object, and by throwing lines and objects.
