Troop 48 Update 8/11/22

Posted on Thu, Aug 11, 2022

Welcome to Our Newest Troop 48 Scouts!

Welcome to three Scouts and their families who have transferred from Troop 87 to Troop 48:

  • Sawyer Bors-Koefoed – First Class Rank
  • Judd Fontanilla – Life Rank
  • Parker Simpson – Second Class Rank

We are glad you have joined Troop 48!

Aviation Merit Badge – 3 Slots Open

There are 3 slots open and the deadline to submit a merit application is at the Tuesday troop meeting on 8/16. After that, another troop will be offered the slots.

Aviation Merit Badge, including an opportunity to fly a small fixed-wing plane, will be conducted over the course of three sessions in September. (See below.) The course is being led by two pilots at FedEx including Eric Hube, former assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 48 and father of two Eagle Scouts. This is a unique opportunity to learn how planes work, 'fly' one in the FedEx simulator and then 'take the stick' in a real plane under the command of a pilot.

NOTE: Homework will be assigned and then reviewed at the next meeting. Those who attend the sessions and complete the homework will be able to earn the badge.

The course is limited to twelve Troop 48 Scouts and permission from the Scoutmaster has already been granted. A filled-out and signed merit badge application (blue card) will be required to reserve a spot in the course and these spots will be awarded on a first come-first serve basis. In addition, the two attached 'consent' forms will need to be submitted on or before the night of the 13th. There is no charge for this course.

The dates of the course in September:

  • Tuesday the 13th - Classroom training in Room 111 of FPC from 7-8:30 p.m (Scout meeting room).
  • Tuesday the 20th - Simulator use at FedEx from 6:30-8:30 p.m. (Directions to follow.) NOTE: No pointed objects allowed on the premises.
  • Saturday the 24th - Flight time at General DeWitt Spain Airport from 9 a.m. to noon. This includes 'taking the stick'.

Parents are welcome to attend any of the sessions. For any adult interested in attending the simulation activity, he/ she will need to provide a copy of his/her government-issued ID on the night of the 13th.

Questions should be asked of Mr. Issing.

NOTE: There will not be a troop meeting on September 13th and 20th.
