Troop 48 Update - Special Edition - Deposits Being Accepted for the Washington, D.C. Summer Adventure Trip

Summer Adventure to Washington DC - $250Deposit due April 19

The Troop 48 Summer Adventure to Washington, D.C. has returned. First experienced in 1996 and then again in 2010 and 2015, this was to occur in 2020 but, …. it returns in 2022.

The trip will run from Thursday July 14th through Thursday the 21st and will be four days of travel and five nights in Washington, D.C. On our first and last nights, we will be staying with our friends at Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church in Kingsport, Tenn. (In their youth group area.) I say friends as they have a Troop 48 too and we have stayed with them the other three times. (Some of their Scouts will be awaiting our arrival with snacks.) While in D.C. we will be staying at a new Hostel known as Steinbruck Center at Luther Place. This hostel opened in 2019 … and … well … must still look brand new! The accommodations include bunk beds in each bunkroom. We expect to have a room for the Scouts and one for the adults. (To follow the B.S.A.’s youth protection guidelines.) The Center is located in downtown D.C.; just a few minutes’ walk to the Metro. From there we will be hitting many of the sites listed below. We are entertaining votes for specific sites as well as suggestions for others in D.C.

Our days will begin with a continental breakfast, provided by us. After that we either resume our travel or, when in D.C., walk or ride on the Metro to the selected sites. (There will be a lot of walking.) Lunches and dinners will be fast food restaurants. Upon return we will take showers and then head to bed.

Still to be planned are visits with our local U.S. Senators and Representatives. Lacking that we do have an in with a Representative from Franklin, Tenn.

Travel with be via rental van. The below pricing reflects the rental of one van for 10 people.

The troop committee has allocated $2,000.00 towards this trip which makes for a per person (pp.) cost of $500.00. Think of it … that is just $62.50 a day for three meals and all of this adventure. In fact, except for the brown bag lunch on day 1, and any spending money, the $500.00 allows for an all-inclusive trip.

We are now soliciting deposits of $250.00 pp. due by the April 19th troop meeting. Since the van size dictates the maximum number which we can take, an excess of deposits may result in not having room for some Scouts. In that case the deposit will be refunded via a troop check. Deposits may be made by check, cash, ScoutBucks (up to your balance) or via Plastiq or PayPal. If using electronic payment, once done, please send an e-mail to Fred Lee and Scoutmaster Issing. Deposits will be refundable through May 3rd. The balance will be due on May 24th.

Much more information will be communicated once the deposits are received.

Below is the master list of potential sites and activities. Rows in green are open for business; those in yellow need additional work to secure tickets; those in white are in-process and those in red are currently closed or will be our week.
