Troop 48 Update - 9/11/20
Posted on Fri, Sep 11, 2020
Reminder: This Sunday, September 13 is the deadline to pay for the September 26 Canoe Trip using Plastiq or PayPal if you don’t have enough Scout Bucks balance
A few updates to the Canoe Trip details (changes from previous announcements):
- Parents will need to drop Scouts off at the Bateman Bridge parking lot, just north of Moscow, TN between 8:00 and 8:30 AM on September 26 (specific directions will be provided in the trip plan). Once we get everyone together, the outfitter will take everyone by van to the put-in at LaGrange which is about a 10 minute drive. Masks will be required in the parking lots and in the van during shuttle to the put-in. Anyone uncomfortable with this arrangement can drop their Scout at the LaGrange location instead, but please inform Mr. Hormberg in advance.
- Parents will pick up Scouts from the Bateman Bridge parking lot around 3:00 PM.
- If you are bringing your own boat, please let Mr. Hormberg know by September 15. We need to let the outfitter know so that we can make arrangements for shuttling.
- All those going on the canoe trip (Scouts and adults) need to have turned in current BSA Annual Health and Medical Record forms A, B1 and B2 to Mr. Richard Ralph (within the past year). If you have any updates to your health forms, please let Mr. Ralph know. https://filestore.scouting.org/filestore/HealthSafety/pdf/680-001_AB.pdf
- If you cannot attend the September 15 troop meeting and want to sign up for the canoe trip, email Mr. Bo Hormberg and Mr. Frederick Lee prior to September 15 troop meeting to sign up.
Scout Bucks Balances
All fees paid for the March campout were refunded to Scout Bucks accounts. Any Skymont fees that were paid with Scout Bucks were refunded to Scout Bucks accounts. Skymont fees not paid by Scout Bucks for those who did not request a check refund were refunded to Scout Bucks accounts. Skymont check refunds for those who requested one will be paid soon. If you have any questions about your Scout Bucks balance, please email Kim Ridenhour and Frederick Lee.
If you are planning to go on the Canoe Trip on September 26 and do not have enough Scout Bucks to pay for the $30 per person fee, please make a credit card payment using Plastiq or PayPal by September 13. Links can be found on the Troop 48 website [www.troop48.org]www.troop48.org at the bottom of the home page. Please note that there is an added transaction fee for Plastiq payments. Credit card payments should be made prior to Sunday, September 13, so we can verify payment prior to the September 15 sign-up deadline. Please also email Mr. Frederick Lee if you are making a credit card payment to tell him the amount of the payment and what the payment is for. Making a payment is not the same as signing up for the trip, so please be sure to sign up at the September 15 troop meeting, or email Mr. Hormberg and Mr. Lee in advance of the September 15 meeting, if you cannot attend.
Canoe Trip – Saturday, September 26
On Saturday, September 26 we will be taking a day trip to paddle the famous Ghost River section of the Wolf River near La Grange, Tennessee.
The official sign-up will be at the September 15 troop meeting. The $30 per person fee is due September 15 if paying with Scout Bucks or September 13 if paying with a credit card using Plastiq or PayPal on the troop’s website.
Here are some details:
- Only those who have passed as “Swimmer” at the BSA swim check within the past year will be allowed to go on this trip (“Beginner” qualification is not eligible). If you have been practicing swimming and would like to re-take the swim check, please contact Mr. Bo Hormberg to arrange a time. Swim checks should be completed prior to September 15.
- Parents will need to drop Scouts off at the Bateman Bridge, just north of Moscow, TN between 8:00 and 8:30 AM (about a 30-45 minute drive from Faith Presbyterian Church, closer if you live in Collierville).

- If you are bringing your own boat, please let Mr. Hormberg know by September 15. We need to let the outfitter know so that we can make arrangements for shuttling.
- Participants need to bring their own food and water for the day. We will take a lunch break along the river.
- Cost is $30 per person, which covers the equipment rental, and needs to be paid with Scout Bucks if there is an available balance or be paid on the troop’s website with a credit card using Plastiq or PayPal
- A waiver form needs to be signed by each participant (parent signature for Scouts)
- Scouts and adults would need to wear a mask when not in the canoe, bring hand sanitizer and maintain social distancing
- Scouts who have not canoed with the troop before will be paired with someone with canoe experience; kayaks will be available only for those with prior river experience with the troop
- All participants will be required to wear a personal flotation device (PFD) or life preserver. They will be provided or you may wear your own one.

Adult Volunteers Needed
- We need adult volunteers to assist with the Greenery and Popcorn sales. This year, Marjorie Reynolds will lead the Greenery sale and Kim Ridenhour will lead the Popcorn sale, but this is the last year they will be doing it, so we would like to have two volunteers work with them this year so they can lead the sales next year. If you are interested in either of these roles, please contact Kim Ridenhour.
- We need an adult volunteer to manage our troop’s Facebook site, posting articles each week. Material for posting will be provided. If you are interested in this role, please contact Kim Ridenhour. We also are looking for someone to replace Kim as Committee Chair. Let Kim or John Campbell know if you are interested in that role.
- The Troop Committee has begun to meet regularly again virtually on WebEx. The next Committee meeting will be on September 14 at 7 PM. All parents are welcome to attend Troop Committee meetings. If you are not a Committee member, but would like to attend the Committee meeting, please let Kim Ridenhour know and she will send you the WebEx invitation.
All Troop 48 in-person activities are cancelled until the church informs us that we can return.
